The Mafia Wars Ghosts of Christmas Past and Future

The year of 2009 is about to come to an end and I for one must say that it has been quite a good year.

Even though Mafia Wars experienced some glitches and hiccups in the later part of the year the folks over at Zynga have done a great job of fixing most of the problems that we have encountered.

The New Year looks like it is going to be a good one as well as far as Mafia Wars goes.

New Years Job

Expect a brand new featured job starting December 28th and continuing through January 4th. According to Zynga “This job will give you even more options than before including choosing different missions with different payouts.”

Bangkok Expansion

Originally the Bangkok Expansion was slated for release during the Christmas holidays but has been pushed back to a January 2010 release. Personally I am happy to see a game provider that is willing to make sure that an expansion is ready instead of pushing it out before it is ready. Bravo Zynga!

Other 2010 Features

Multi-Item Gifting – Zynga will be making it much easier to strengthen your Mafia Wars mafia. This feature will most likely migrate into other games which bear the Zynga brand as well.

Translations – Mafia Wars will become available to many more players throughout the world by offering it in many more languages. Once again I foresee this opening up other games as well.

Robbing – Zynga has heard the voice of its players and will be reintroducing robbing in 2010 with and new format.

Developers Days – This is in my opinion one of the best ways to improve any game. Zynga plans to hold meetings between the development team and player base in order to come up with new ideas.

Beta Testing – It seems that Zynga has decided that do more in the way of beta testing. You can never test enough when putting out a quality product. Everyone needs to keep in mind that even though a product goes through an extensive beta process there will always be the inevitable problems once the product goes live.

Free Stuff – It looks like we will be getting more free stuff in the way of weekly giveaways, rewards, contests, and more. Hey, free stuff is always good.

With 2009 coming to an end very soon I took some time to reflect back upon the year and realized that in the Mafia Wars world 2009 was a good year. We saw many new features and even though some were very good and others not so good, all in all we had fun and it was great. 2010 is almost upon us and I think that it is going to be another great year.

In Mafia Wars Christmas Is A Time for Giving

24

All around the world the Christmas season has traditionally a time of giving. Some give to “Da Family” and others give to friends and acquaintances, but there are some who choose to give to charities to help those who are not as privileged as they are.

This Yuletide Season Zynga has chosen a charity and asked that the members of Mafia Wars help. The charity that they have chosen is called FATEM and is based in Mirebalais, Haiti. The group is dedicated to bringing information technology to the people of Haiti which will help with economic advancement in the area. The group also supports the general education of Haitian children and ensures that these children receive meals that will help them grow and learn.

For you contribution Zynga has chosen to offer a special Limited Edition item that you can use in Mafia Wars at the cost of 25 Godfather Points.

Haitian Drum – 44 Attack – 46 Defense

As Mafia Wars players I can guarantee that none of us know what it is like to go without a meal or live in live in the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Haiti is the 7th poorest nation in the world and we have the chance to help Zynga bring needed food and technology to the country.

The cost of the item is 25 Reward Points. Many of us have that many saved up from leveling but using these points will not help the people of Haiti. You can purchase 42 reward points for a measly $7.00, less than most of us pay for a fast food meal. If you can afford it please invest in the future of another country.

Help Zynga change the lives of the children of Haiti if you can.

Even The Mob Celebrates Christmas

Mafioso might all seem to be big tough shoot first ask questions later type of people but they do celebrate Christmas. Sometimes I imagine what a mafia member might get their family. I picture t-shirts with catchy sayings. Some of these might fit the bill.

  • Mafioso Morgue – We Stab em Then We Slab em
  • Carmine’s BBQ – Grill em Then Kill em
  • Anthony’s Cleaning Service – Let Us Handle Your Dirty Work
  • Mikie’s Dry Cleaning – We Launder Anything
  • Who’s Yer Godfadda?

Zynga is in on the Yuletide season as usual and is holding a holiday event through January, 3rd, 2010. During this time they have made special Christmas gifts available for you to put under your mafia’s tree.

The Safe House

The Safe House is another Christmas feature but it should not be confused with the free gifts listed above. In order to get gifts from the Safe House you need to click on the “ask for more gifts” button and select as many of your mafia as possible each day.

In order to ensure that you get as many gifts as possible you should select members of your mafia that you know are active players. Daily players are your best of course. Make sure that you return the favor when your mafia members request gifts from you too.

The gifts that you receive are completely random but I am told that the items are some of the best yet in Mafia Wars. You can open your gifts early but it will cost you Godfather Points. Best wait until Christmas Day.

Limited Time Job

You will also have access to a holiday limited time job called “Bring the Family Together.” Completing this job results in special holiday gifts and is a multi step process once again giving you the chance to get you hands on some hard to get loot.

Here we are just a few days before Christmas. In no time jolly ole Saint Nick will be making his yearly rounds and the snow is falling in the United States. With the spirit of Christmas in the air many of us think of our loved ones and look forward to spending time around the Christmas tree.

Zynga has been busy this year as well. When we had scheduled maintenance on Friday, December 12th, I thought that they may implement the Bangkok expansion but I was mistaken. Instead they were setting up a blowout sale, setting up Holiday Event, and presenting us with a charity to which we can contribute.

Updates, Bug Fixes and Scheduled Maintenance …Does that Equal Bangkok?

19
Dec/09
0

I have been an avid game player for many years and have been a beta tester for quite some time as well. Having worked with most of the larger game development companies such as Sony Online Entertainment, Blizzard Entertainment, NC Soft, Funcom and many others I am pleased to see that Zynga works so diligently on its social network games. Many developers in the social network gaming industry are less than industrious when it comes to fixing problems and developing new content.

The week before Christmas has become a very busy week for the gang at Zynga and I am happy to see that they didn’t all take off for the holidays early as happens too many times in the online game industry.

On Wednesday December 16th the team fixed many bugs in Mafia Wars and introduced some updates as well. Here is a quick list of the bugs fixed and the updates for this week.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed issues with accepting and sending gifts for new gifts (old gifts might still have issues)
  • Fixed issues with Moscow chapter progression
  • Fixed issues with Moscow jobs page not loading for some users
  • Fixed the scrolling issue with the Game News page
  • Fixed commenting on job help posts.
  • Fixed the issue some users were facing with the My Mafia page not loading correctly

Updates

  • Re-enabled loot drops for fights
  • Disabled money laundering re-posts
  • Removed pop-up for job help when nobody helped
  • Temporarily Removed Top Families (Overall Leaderboards)

Today, December 18th Mafia Wars will be down for scheduled maintenance starting at 8 AM and ending at 11 AM, this time is in Pacific Standard Time. Could this scheduled maintenance also include the release of the Bangkok expansion? To be honest it would not surprise me.

Have you picked up the items needed to unlock the expansion? If not you better do it quick. Here is a list of the items and where you can find them.

  • Triad Coin – This item can be found in the New York Soldier Tier.
  • Yakuza Sake – Find this item in the New York Hitman Tier.
  • Thai Note – You can find this item in New York in the Enforcer Tier.
  • Thai Passport – To get this item you will have to wait until the launch date.

To find the items look for an elephant icon on the job tiers. It shouldn’t take long to get the items, then all you have to do is wait for the official release and you will get your Thai Passport.

With Mafia Wars going down for 3 hours today could it mean that Bangkok will go live? It just might so get ready for Mafia Wars Orientals style.

4 Simple Mafia Wars Tips For A Strong Character

16
Dec/09
2

I have been playing Mafia Wars for quite some time and have built numerous characters so I thought I would pass along four simple things that are the basis of creating a strong character.

1.) Use your Energy effectively

This is probably the most important thing in Mafia Wars. If you want to level quickly you need to make sure that you put your energy to the best use. Visit one of the bookmarklet pages and pick up a tool to help you determine how to manage your energy when completing jobs.

2.) Linear Jobs

Complete jobs in a linear manner for the best results in the long run. If you are starting a new character begin with the Street Thug tier and complete all three levels of it before moving on. Resist the urge to jump around on the tiers simply because you are high enough level for them. This holds true for expansion as well. Visit them to get your business started then forget about them except for collecting your business payouts.

3.) Build a Strong Mafia

Spend time visiting add me pages or add me email pages to build your mafia. Only 500 of your mafia may participate in a fight but having a huge mafia is a boon in and of itself. Some of the advantages of having a large mafia are completing collections and re-vaulting for boosts. You will be surprised how quickly you can finish out collections and get the bonuses by simply asking for the items. Always be sure to gift in return when you can as well.

4.) Equip Your Mafia

Your mafia is only as strong as the equipment that you provide them. When you enter into combat you will provide each of the 500 members of your mafia with an offensive weapon, a defensive item, and a vehicle. Having the best is a way to ensure that you are a formidable enemy for anyone who chooses to attack you.

These four tips might seem like “no-brainers” but you would be surprised at how many people do not follow these simple ideas. Many are racing to get to the highest level they can and pay little or no attention to building and equipping a strong mafia. Others have no idea how to maximize their energy or where to find a bookmarklet to help. Use these simple tips to make your Mafia Wars experience more enjoyable.

What You Need To Know About Facebook Changes

15
Dec/09
0

Recently Facebook announced changes being made to the privacy settings of its users. While these changes are designed to make things easier and simpler for its users is it more of a pain in the butt than helpful? You decide.

The default settings for the new privacy features will make all of your information available not only to the 350 million Facebook users as well as search engines such as Yahoo, Google and others.

Does this open up your account to even more danger in the form of hackers, scammers and other unscrupulous entities? I believe that it can, but you can do more to protect yourself by tweaking the following settings.

Search Settings

With the release of these new privacy settings all accounts were set to a default configuration. This configuration includes resetting your public search settings to the on mode. This setting means that you are allowing your information to be seen by any search engine. If you do not want your information to be available to anyone who wants to see it you need to reset the option to the off mode.

Hyper Control

It seems that with the new “privacy” features Facebook is actually removing some of your control over who can and cannot view your information. If you want to have more control over who can see updates, photos, etc all you have to do is go to the Privacy Settings > Profile section and you can decide who can see your information.

Friends List

While Facebook generally controls your friends list you do have some control you do have control over who can see it. If you want your friends list to remain private (as I do) all you have to do is click on your profile link at the top of the page, then look for a pen icon next to your friends list. When you click this icon simply remove the check mark in front of “Show Friends List to everyone.” Should you want to allow your Friends List to be seen by specific people you can enter their name in the box in this area as well.

Password Protection

One of the smartest things that rolled out with these privacy upgrades was the requirement to enter your password to make any privacy changes. This step would go a very long way to keeping your account safe and hackers on the run if it only worked as intended. It seems that though the system is in place it needs a bit of tweaking by face book.

While Facebook has rolled these changes out under the façade of “more secure privacy” in my opinion is that they have implemented these changes to give search engines more access to its members and thereby increasing their search engine revenue. Not only do these new privacy settings allow search engines to readily see your information they also open up your email address to spammers.

If you want your personal information to remain personal you need to adjust your settings to limit search engine access as much as possible.

Mafia Wars Bangkok – The Triad

11
Dec/09
0

Bangkok, the Mafia Wars upcoming expansion thrusts the player into the intrigue of a war between the Triad and Yakuza and is set in the orient in Thailand. While many players could care less about the story behind the expansion there are those of us who are interested in learning more about the factions involved. Today we are going to learn about the Triad.

Triad or the “Triad Society” is a Chinese underground society which is responsible for the majority of organized crime in the far east in countries including Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia and Mainland China. This group has strong cells in Western Countries where there is a significant Chinese population such as New York, Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle and Vancouver.

Like the Mafia of Sicily they have their hands in all forms of organized crime such as car theft, drug trafficking, contract killing, extortion, money laundering and many others including the counterfeiting of copyrighted products. The products that they counterfeit range from phony name brand clothing and watches to computer software and DVDs. Unlike the Mafia of the United States they also traffic in the sale of endangered species.

The Triad began as a resistance to the Manchu Emperor of the Qing Dynasty. The Manchus were regarded by the population as a foreign occupation force at the time. In the 1760s a society called the Tian Di Hui or The Society of Heaven and Earth was formed in Mainland China with the purpose of overthrowing the dynasty. Spreading through other parts of Chine the group branched off into many groups. One of which is the Sanheuhi or the Tree Harmonies Society.

Since the groups used the triangle prominently in gang imagery the term “Triad” was coined by British authorities in Hong Kong.

Over the years the societies which began as patriotic entities transformed into a criminal organization.

When the Communist Part of China came to power in 1949 they cracked down on crime and the Triad members moved to a more open society in the British colony of Hong Kong. During the 1950s it was estimated that there were about 300,000 members in Hong Kong alone.

The Triad divided the city and island up into geographic areas and ethnic groups and set up eight main groups to control the areas. The main groups were Wo, Tung, Rung, Chuen, Luen, 14K, Yee On, and Shing. Each group had its own sub-societies as well.

Since the 1950s the Triad gangs have spread to many other countries including areas of the United States. One might think that with so many groups there would be little organizational structure but actually it is quite the opposite. Triad gangs follow a very strict rank structure.

Here is a diagram of the structure of a Triad Gang.

Mountain Master
Dragon Head (Leader)

Vanguard
(Operations Officer)

Deputy Mountain Master
(Deputy)

Incense Master
(Ceremonies Officer)

White Paper Fan
(Administrator)

Red Pole
(Enforcer)

Straw Sandal
(Liasion Officer)

49ers
(Ordinary Members)

Blue Lanterns
(Uninitiated Members)

Triad members take live by a list of morals and an oath that includes the following.

  1. After having entered the Han gates I must treat the parents and relatives of my sworn brothers as my own kin. I shall suffer death by five thunderbolts if I do not keep this oath.
  2. I shall assist my sworn brothers to bury their parents and brothers by offering financial or physical assistance. I shall suffer death by five thunderbolts if I do not keep this oath.
  3. When Han brothers visit my house, I shall provide them with board and lodging. I shall be killed by myriads of knives if I treat them as strangers.
  4. I will always acknowledge my Han brothers when they identify themselves. If I ignore them I will be killed by myriads of swords.
  5. I shall not disclose the secrets of the Han family, not even to my parents, brothers, or wife. I shall never disclose the secrets for money. I will be killed by myriads of swords if I do so.
  6. I shall never betray my sworn brothers. If, through a misunderstanding, I have caused the arrest of one of my brothers I must release him immediately. If I break this oath I will be killed by five thunderbolts.
  7. I will offer financial assistance to sworn brothers who are in trouble in order that they may pay their passage fee, etc. If I break this oath I will be killed by five thunderbolts.
  8. I must never cause harm or bring trouble to my sworn brothers or Incense Master. If I do so I will be killed by myriads of swords.
  9. I must never commit any indecent assaults on the wives, sisters, or daughters, of my sworn brothers. I shall be killed by five thunderbolts if I break this oath.
  10. I shall never embezzle cash or property from my sworn brothers. If I break this oath I will be killed by myriads of swords.

  15. If I should take advantage of a sworn brother or force unfair business deals upon him I will be killed by myriads of swords.
  16. If I knowingly convert my sworn brother’s cash or property to my own use I shall be killed by five thunderbolts.
  17. If I have wrongly taken a sworn brother’s cash or property during a robbery I must return them to him. If I do not I will be killed by five thunderbolts.
  18. If I am arrested after committing an offence I must accept my punishment and not try to place blame on my sworn brothers. If I do so I will be killed by five thunderbolts.
  19. If any of my sworn brothers are killed, or arrested, or have departed to some other place, I will assist their wives and children who may be in need. If I pretend to have no knowledge of their difficulties I will be killed by five thunderbolts.
  20. When any of my sworn brothers have been assaulted or blamed by others, I must come forward and help him if he is in the right or advise him to desist if he is wrong. If he has been repeatedly insulted by others I shall inform our other brothers and arrange to help him physically or financially. If I do not keep this oath I will be killed by five thunderbolts.
  21. If it comes to my knowledge that the Government is seeking any of my sworn brothers who has come from other provinces or from overseas, I shall immediately inform him in order that he may make his escape. If I break this oath I will be killed by five thunderbolts.
  22. I must not conspire with outsiders to cheat my sworn brothers at gambling. If I do so I will be killed by myriads of swords.
  23. I shall not cause discord amongst my sworn brothers by spreading false reports about any of them. If I do so I will be killed by myriads of swords.
  24. I shall not appoint myself as Incense Master without authority. After entering the Han gates for three years the loyal and faithful ones may be promoted by the Incense Master with the support of his sworn brothers. I shall be killed by five thunderbolts if I make any unauthorized promotions myself.
  25. If my natural brothers are involved in a dispute or law suit with my sworn brothers I must not help either party against the other but must attempt to have the matter settled amicably. If I break this oath I will be killed by five thunderbolts.
  26. After entering the Han gates I must forget any previous grudges I may have borne against my sworn brothers. If I do not do so I will be killed by five thunderbolts.
  27. I must not trespass upon the territory occupied by my sworn brothers. I shall be killed by five thunderbolts if I pretend to have no knowledge of my brothers’ rights in such matters.
  28. I must not covet or seek to share any property or cash obtained by my sworn brothers. If I have such ideas I will be killed.
  29. I must not disclose any address where my sworn brothers keep their wealth nor must I conspire to make wrong use of such knowledge. If I do so I will be killed by myriads of swords.
  30. I must not give support to outsiders if so doing is against the interests of any of my sworn brothers. If I do not keep this oath I will be killed by myriads of swords.
  31. I must not take advantage of the Han brotherhood in order to oppress or take violent or unreasonable advantage of others. I must be content and honest. If I break this oath I will be killed by five thunderbolts.
  32. I shall be killed by five thunderbolts if I behave indecently towards small children of my sworn brothers’ families.
  33. If any of my sworn brothers has committed a serious offense I must not inform upon them to the Government for the purposes of obtaining a reward. I shall be killed by five thunderbolts if I break this oath.
  34. I must not take to myself the wives and concubines of my sworn brothers nor commit adultery with them. If I do so I will be killed by myriads of swords.
  35. I must never reveal Han secrets or signs when speaking to outsiders. If I do so I will be killed by myriads of swords.
  36. After entering the Han gates I shall be loyal and faithful and shall endeavour to overthrow Ch’ing and restore Ming by coordinating my efforts with those of my sworn brethren even though my brethren and I may not be in the same professions. Our common aim is to avenge our Five Ancestors. If I break this oath the Incense Master has a right to assassinate me.

** This list is abbreviated due to translation.

As you can see the Triad gangs are as organized as any other criminal organization in the world and follow a set of rules just as the Mafia, Vory, Mayfia, and others.

Understanding your enemy is the first step in defeating them.

Mafia Wars Bangkok Is About To Go Live – Get Your Unlock Items NOW!

9
Dec/09
2

Mafia Wars Bangkok is the newest expansion from Zynga and is a continuation of their very popular game. This expansion takes place in the mysterious orient and is based in Thailand.

The Japanese Yakuza and Chinese Triads have battled for control of this city and country for years and you will be thrust into the middle of the conflict just as you were with the Vory and Mafiya in Moscow.

While the expansion is not live yet Zynga is giving you the ability to get your hands on the items that will be required to unlock the expansion.

Here is a quick reference for the items.

I hope that they iron out all of the problems with the expansion before they roll it out. The Moscow expansion was released before it was ready and resulted in major changes involving earning R$ and the bribe penalties. Perhaps they have learned from their mistakes.

While the exact release date of Mafia Wars Bangkok is unknown it is probably best to get the items to unlock the expansion now and be ready. Good luck in Bangkok and look forward to up to date information as soon as it is available.
