Understanding Attack and Defense Numbers in Mafia Wars

A have received a few emails lately asking if I would talk a bit about attack and defense statistics and what they really mean. I will do my best to explain and show you which items you should be concentrating on.
Weapons, Armor and Vehicles are important when attacking and defending but they are not the only things that you need to have. The most important item that you can have is a full strong mafia of 501 members. There are many ways that you can grow your mafia and I discuss them in detail in The Ultimate Mafia Wars Leveling Guide.
When attacking or defending each of your 501 mafia members brings 1 weapon, 1 armor item, and 1 vehicle and you must provide the items. When attacking your members will be using the items that you have with the best attack score. If you do not have 501 of the best items the game some of your mafia will be given lesser items in descending order. The same holds true for defending. The game will hand out the best defensive score items that you have and then work its way down. As you can see having the best of both offensive and defensive items is paramount if you want to control your own destiny in Mafia Wars.
To help you find the best items in the game I have listed them below. You will find a list of the top 25 items of each type, offensive and defensive. Since not everyone wants to fork over real money for Godfather Points or has been around for crates or holiday events I have also included a version that displays the top 25 looted items for each stat.

Experimental Crates – New Weapons, Armor and Vehicles in Mafia Wars
Dec/090
Right now you can get your hands on some very nice items by purchasing Experimental Crates. They went on sale on November 10th and it is unknown when the sale will be over.
The cost for these crates must be paid in Godfather Points (Reward Points) and are as follows.
One Crate – 20 Points
Three Crates – 55 Points
In the crates are weapons, armor and vehicles. Some are good and others so-so.
When purchasing an Experimental Crate you have the following chance of finding the best items.
60% chance for common items
30% chance for uncommon items
10% chance for rare items
The chance remains the same regardless of purchasing one or three crates.
Here is a quick list of items that may be found in the crates.

Most of the items are not that great, as it seems to be with all crates but the Chevalier Exoskeleton and the Executioner Drone are quite nice. Unfortunately the only way to get these items is to spend Godfather Points and as we all know these points are earned very slowly by playing the game or by purchasing them.
I have never purchased points and never intend to, but you never know, something truly wonderful may come along and I could change my mind. If you have points built up and want to take a chance on getting some fairly unique loot then maybe crates are your cup of tea.
Mafia Wars – The Importance of Armor
Nov/090
Everyone knows that in order to win a war there are many things that must be considered when developing a winning strategy. One of the most important things that many new players over look in Mafia Wars is the importance of obtaining the best armor for their mafia.
Armor is used not only by players as job prerequisites or for use in a mafia war, working the hitlist, fighting bosses, and other players, it is used by each member of the player’s mafia.
Getting your hands on the best armor is of paramount importance and today I am going to give you some insight on how to get that armor. Below is a list of armor that is currently the best in the game.

Most of these items come from spending Godfather Points or from crates. This is Zynga’s way of ensuring that the game is profitable for them.
My advice, if you don’t want to fork over real money is to pick the Shturmovik as your offensive armor, and the Executive Overcoat as your defensive and work the jobs until you have 501 of each.
Until you can build up 501 of these items make sure that you substitute the best that you can buy or the best dropped in missions. Armoring is one of the most important part of the game to ensure success.
