Happy Halloween – Ghosts, Goblins, and LOOT!
Oct/093
Happy Halloween to all of you! Halloween is one of my favorite times of the year and has been since I was just a little mobling. It is the time of year where the kids get all dressed up and invade our neighborhoods. I have always loved handing out candy and playing trick on them. This year to keep in the Mafia Wars spirit I bought candy guns and am offering them to the neighborhood kids.
Zynga seems to like holidays too and Halloween is no exception. Every holiday we get new and fun loot items to collect and give away. This year we can send our mafia and those on our friends list a Ghost Thug, The Scooby-Do Mystery van, and a Teat Bag.
In other happenings for Halloween we have been given a special Limited Time Job
Rob A Candy Truck
Experience: Varies
Energy Cost: Varies
Completion of the job awards the following:
Treat Bag - 18 Attack / 15 Defense
All in all not too bad of an item, believe me there are worse items that come out of crates that you have to pay Godfather points for. The only catch to this job is that it can only be done once per day but each completion award 75% job mastery
Of course you can also get your hands on some pretty decent items just by doing jobs during the Halloween event. Here is a list.
Weapons
Bloody Poker Chips – 22 Attack / 10 Defense
Fake Vampire Teeth – 34 Attack / 15 Defense
Laser Squirrel – 43 Attack / 12 Defense
Armor
YoZombie – 21 Attack / 18 Defense
Monkey Brain Stew – 2 Attack / 27 Defense
Vehicles
Kraken – 24 Attack / 41 Defense
Looney Plague Cow – 25 Attack / 15 Defense
Dead End – 32 Attack / 20 Defense
I always look forward to holiday game events. Online Massively Multiplayer Games have always had some pretty interesting things from the events back in Everquest (which usually got me killed repeatedly) to the events that Blizzard holds in World of Warcraft. I am glad that Zynga has added holiday fun to Social Network Games as well.
Tomorrow is Halloween so be sure to stock up on goodies for all of the little goblins, ghost, pirates, etc that will be invading your neighborhood and if you are out driving be sure to keep your eyes open for them as well.
Hitlist Hi-Jinx For Experience And Fun
Oct/093
Mafia Wars is one of the best, if not the best Social Network game out at the moment appealing to players who want to quietly go about their business leveling by doing jobs and those who want to level through fighting.
I have characters of both types but I think that my fighting characters are much more fun. On these characters I do jobs but spend the vast majority of my time fighting and working the hitlist and I am going to tell you exactly what I do and how you can love it as well. If you follow these instructions you will find that you will start enjoying the hitlist as much as I do.
Set Up
1.) Make sure that your mafia is at least at the 501 member maximum.
2.) Use the gifting methods that I teach in The Ultimate Mafia Wars Leveling Guide to ensure that you have 501 of the top defensive items.
3.) Change your title to a lower one. Lower titles attract lower level hit men.
4.) Have your buddies put you on the hitlist repeatedly, or do it with another of your characters.
Once you have the set up listed above you are ready to start working the defensive hitlist. The object is to get your character put on the hitlist and fight defensive battles, save offensive fighting for another character.
When your character is put on the hitlist make sure that the amount that is set is toward the lower end of the spectrum. A lower bounty has two effects that benefit your defensive concept.
First the lower bounty will eliminate all but the most bored heavy hitters since most of the big guns go for the most cash. This will help keep you alive longer.
Second the lower bounty will attract newer and less experienced players who are looking to make a quick buck. Your 501 mafia members and 501 of decent defensive items should chew them up pretty quick.
This strategy is great for the type of player who likes to play the game for longer periods of time each day simply because working the hitlist demands that you keep yourself healed.
The best advice I can give is to use the hospital button to refresh your screen so you keep an accurate view on your health but only heal yourself when necessary.
Of course this method is not fool proof. You will die on the hitlist…and that is a fact. Occasionally one of the big guns will get bored and squash you like a bug but in the long run you will earn some good experience and cash.
Working the hitlist is a method requires that you are at your computer to work and is NOT a fire and forget strategy. Beef your character up with 501 mafia and 501 of the best defensive items before you attempt this. Use the hospital button to refresh but heal only when necessary. If you follow this strategy you WILL die but the rewards are worth it.
How to Maximize Leveling by Minimizing Repetitive Tasks
Oct/093
When you are concentrating on leveling a new character in Mafia Wars or even an old one the key to success is time management. You want every second that you spend playing to pay off through earning experience and leveling. Today I am going to revisit an old topic to help you do just that.
Mafia Wars automation is a topic that I have posted on before but I think that from time to time it deserves to be revisited. The faster that you can do the mundane tasks associated with the game the faster you will level and thus squeeze every drop of experience out of you play time.
One of the best things that you can do to cut down on the repetitive and time consuming tasks that slow you down is to use Mafia Wars bookmarklets. Bookmarklets are small pieces of code that have been created for ease of use and to automate aspects of the game to make them much easier for us as players.
All that you have to do to use most bookmarklets is simply drag them from the page that they are on and drop them onto the bookmark bar or right click and choose add to favorites. Below we will discuss some very helpful bookmarklets and where you can find them.
Spockholm’s Mafia Wars Bookmarklets
http://www.spockholm.com/mafia/bookmarklets.php
Repeat Gift – Getting gifts is one of the easiest ways to equip a brand new character in the least amount of time. If you are following or have followed my Ultimate Mafia Wars Leveling Guide you already know this but I am going to let this secret out for everyone.
When you start a new character you can use one of your more established characters to supply the new one with all the things that they need such as 501 Armored State Cars, Canonazo, and Track Loaders. While the easiest way is gifting these items who wants to click “send gift” thousands of times. If you use the Repeat Gift bookmarklet you wont have to.
ExpEnergy – This bookmarklet is essential if you want to wring every ounce of experience out of your energy pool. It displays the experience versus energy ratio of each job allowing you to maximize energy output and should be in the arsenal of any Mafia Wars player who is even thinking about speed leveling.
LimitedLoot - Make buying limited loot on your Mafia Wars home page easy. Tell this bookmarklet how many you want to buy and it will go to work for you.
AttackX – This is a super utility for those who love to fight. The bookmarklet asks how many attacks you want to make and already has your available stamina filled in but of course you can dictate how much or how little to use. Important information such as experience gained, money gained and more are displayed during your attack spree.
RobX – I know that at the moment robbing seems to be up in the air but if it is reinstated this bookmarklet allows you to continue to rob and works much like AttackX above.
RepeatJob – Hooray no more clicking on those jobs that you must do hundreds of times to get consumable items. This bookmarklet will continue doing the specified job until you are out of energy.
This is just a partial list of the bookmarklets that are available. There are many more that automate everything from purchasing Mafia Mike’s to adding members to your mafia. More can be found on the following pages.
Bobby Heartrates’s Mafia Tools – http://www.heartrate.se/
Vern’s Mafia Wars Tools – http://www.vern.com/mwtools/
The key to power leveling in Mafia Wars is getting the most experience out of every second that you play. Mundane everyday tasks such as gifting, job grinding, adding mafia members, and more not only slow down your advancement, they are boring. Use bookmarklets to automate gaming experience to maximize leveling ability and avoid boredom.
Newbie Education Project for Mafia Wars
Oct/092
While I am learning more about Rackets I thought I would pass along some advice for new Mafia Wars players. With the popularity of the game it is inevitable that there will be literally thousands of players joining us each and every day and it is up to us to teach them the “ropes” so to speak.
If you decide to start an organized clan, teach the new members good “netiquette” early on and you will be much better off. Oh, you don’t know what a clan is? That’s easy; a clan is a group of players who have organized under one name. You have seen them and maybe not even noticed or understood.
Take a look at the fight section of the game and you will see some players have initials in brackets before their name. This is their clan affiliation. Tomorrow I will give you a list of the clans that I know of so you can better understand what the numbers, letters, and symbols mean.
Here are a few things that you can teach your players to do and not to do in order to be a better social network citizen.
1.) Gifting
Gifting is wonderful and everyone should participate if they can. The annoying part comes when a player publishes every gift that they give. It is much better just to gift and skip the publishing.
2.) Lotto
We all play the lotto with most of hoping for one of the super rare items from the Daily Chance Collection. Believe me they are rare, I have almost 30 accounts and have yet to get even one piece and I play every day.
Teach your young players not to publish their lotto numbers. No one cares what their numbers were and it just clutters up everyone’s wall.
3.) Hitlisting
If you have been put on the hitlist there is a reason for it, most likely because you have been a pain in the ass to someone else. Remember that the person who claimed your bounty is just a person doing a job so don’t hitlist them. If you must hitlist someone then hitlist the person who paid the bounty in the first place, they are the one that caused you to be attacked.
4.) Wishlist
There is nothing wrong with posting your wishlist to your wall however doing it 20 times per day is annoying. Also, you should try to get all the collections items before going for the big stuff.
5.) Multiple Attacks
Attacking another player is part of the game but you should not get your jollies by attacking the same player repeatedly. Yes you know you can beat them at present but would you like someone doing that to you? Show a little class by and hit them a couple of time and move on to another target.
This advice does not apply to those on the hitlist since the object is to kill the character and collect a bounty. Hit these people as hard and as fast as you can.
6.) Complaining
Say you get attacked from the fight list 10 times in a row from the same person, get used to it and don’t whine about it. Yes, the person that attacked you is doing exactly what I told you not to do, but ultimately attacks are part of the game and you have to deal with it.
7.) Job Bonuses
ALWAYS post your job bonuses to the wall so others can help you and earn some experience and some cash along the way.
8.) Achievements
Only post important achievements on your wall.
These tidbits of advice will go a very long way to ensuring that you are looked upon as a considerate and thoughtful player not only in Mafia Wars but in all of the social network games that you play not to mention the networks themselves.
Racketeering: My Thoughts Thus Far
Oct/090
Though my journey through the new Rackets feature in Mafia Was has just begun I will clue you in on the things that I have discovered. Some of this may be news to many of you while others may have already discovered it for themselves.
Originally Zynga was going to up the skill points gained from leveling to 6 instead of 5 but the idea was tossed rather quickly after they realized that an energy based account, which is what I teach in my Ultimate Mafia Wars Leveling Guide, would simply explode in levels…like you can’t do that already. Grab a copy of the guide and you will be blasting through levels without the extra point.
Instead of the added skill point per level Zynga decided that accounts that have access to the Rackets feature would only require one skill point to level Stamina instead of 2. This is great news if you are they type of player that works the hitlists. For those of you who are pure energy based leveling machines the extra boost to stamina means nothing.
Rackets tend to generate huge amounts of money very quickly. In fact new players with the feature enabled should be able to purchase everything that they can dream of by level 50 or 60 in New York. Soon after that they will discover what most of us already know…money is useless in the long run. With cash being so easy to come by it becomes mundane, especially in New York, and simply takes up bank space. Cuba and Moscow take a bit longer before it becomes useless but ultimately it will.
Parizad who is a Community Manager for Zynga has said:
“Our longtime players will not have their properties taken away, but we are going to give them really good reasons to cash them in. Also, we’re working on whole new kinds of rackets. For example, some will produce boosts, instead of only having the option to get money.”
This would be a good thing since as I said money becomes all but useless pretty quick.
Another added “feature” to accounts with Rackets is that there is no longer any upkeep on weapons, vehicles, or armor. Once again this defeats the purpose of earning billions in cash.
One thing that I dislike about the implementation of Rackets is that new accounts, and those who were given access to the feature (I was not and I have over a dozen accounts) is that they can still rob players who have properties but have none themselves. Let’s hope that Zynga finds a way pretty quick to fix this.
Rackets could be a wonderful thing for Mafia Wars but Zynga needs to balance it quickly. Earning billions in cash is on so good, especially since those with the feature have no upkeep on items. The ability to rob players with properties should be disabled on accounts that have Rackets since the only way to retaliate is to hitlist someone. Not that cash is that important but fair is fair.
Those are my thoughts on the Rackets game for today. See you tomorrow.
Racketeering in Mafia Wars
Oct/095
My apologies for the lack of posts over the last week or so, but I have been trying to develop a solid understanding of the new Racketeering feature that Zynga is now testing in Mafia Wars.
Rackets are a feature that Zynga is testing and it is not available to everyone as yet. It seems that all new accounts have access to this feature as well as some current accounts. Personally I have over a dozen active accounts and none of them have access to Rackets.
In order to test out Rackets I started a new account. With this account I am not going for super fast leveling, eventually it will become an account that I use to work the hitlist for experience and profit, but in the mean time I will use it to get a firm grip on the concept of Rackets and take you along for the ride. As I learn new things I will post them here so we can all learn together.
Along with the Rackets feature you will notice that you have a new pool called Influence. The points in this pool are used with the Rackets feature. Instead of simply collecting money from purchased properties you now spend influence points to “shakedown” a business.
Rackets open up at level 4 and you only have two choices to shakedown.
- Three-Card Monte
- Strip Club
To shakedown these businesses you begin by clicking “Ready to Collect” and then “Shakedown”. Each of them have a time frame for the shakedown to occur and you come back in the appropriate number of hours to collect your illicit gains.
Another interesting aspect of the feature is that you now have an experience bar for each business and you level them just like you do for jobs. What the rewards are I do not know yet.
You may purchase new businesses to shakedown. The first costs $5,000, the second $10,000 and I am assuming that the expense goes up from there. I cannot attest to this but I have been told that you may have a maximum of 5 shakedowns going at any one time. I will let you know on that part as soon as I can.
The concept of this feature seems to be to keep players more involved in the game and give them less down time. If you have a copy of The Ultimate Mafia Wars Leveling Guide you already know how cut down time to a minimum and thus the feature will have little impact on you.
Many seem to dislike the feature because they have to come back and collect at intervals dictated by the racket that you are working on. The Strip Club has a 22 hour wait to collect and I believe that Three-Card Monte is 4 hours.
I am not sure how Rackets are going to impact the game as yet. I cannot form an educated opinion due to my lack of experience with the feature thus far. I asked others who play what they thought of the feature and have heard everything from how much they love the feature from some and how much they hate the feature from others. There is even a small group that is ready to quit playing over it.
I would love to hear your opinion on it so feel free to leave comments below. Let’s get a discussion going.
How To Get The That’s with a “T” Achievement
Sep/0926
If you have played Mafia Wars for any length of time you know that there are many achievements that you can accomplish within the game. Some are so easy that you do not even have to think about it, others are a bit more difficult, and some are very difficult. Then there is one that is literally a pain in the butt. The achievement that I am talking about is “That’s with a “T.”
To accomplish this achievement you must deposit $1 Trillion dollars in the bank in one fell swoop. The first time I tried this one I forgot about the bank’s cut and failed so do not forget. In order to accomplish the achievement you will need a total of $1,111,111,111,112 on hand to account for the bank’s 10% fee.
You might think that the best way to accomplish this is by purchasing huge amounts of real estate, but you would be wrong. Yes owning a few hundred Mega Casinos as well as loads of other properties will help but actually not the best way to go about it.
The easiest way to accomplish this achievement is by smacking around Agostino Cleto. This is the boss found in the Enforcer tier.
The reason that this boss is the key to completing That’s with a “T” is because he is the only boss or aspect of Mafia Wars that scales according to your cash on hand.
Here are a few examples.
Cash on Hand: $0
Risk: $0
Payout: $120,000
Cash on Hand: $500,000
Risk: $2,700
Payout: $120,000
Cash on Hand: $1,000,000
Risk: $5,400
Payout: $120,000
The payout seemed to stay the same until I had $1 Billion on hand. Note that it may have changed earlier but I didn’t check back until I had a Billion on hand
Cash on Hand: $1 Billion
Risk: $5,454,000
Payout: $1,818,000
Cash on Hand: $5 Billion
Risk: $27,054,000
Payout: $9,018,000
Cash on Hand: $10 Billion
Risk: $54,054,000
Payout: $18,018,000
Cash on Hand: $15 Billion
Risk: $81, 054,000
Payout: 27,018,000
As you can see from these examples the payout increases proportionately to the amount of cash you have on hand. Of course the amount that you risk increases as well, but that is the price you have to pay for smacking around a boss.
The costs involved in fighting Agostino Cleto other than monetary are a 16 mafia requirement, if you have a copy of the Ultimate Mafia Wars Leveling guide this will not be a problem since your mafia should be well into the thousands, and energy.
I am not saying that buying properties is a bad way to get this achievement accomplished, but doing a little wet work on a boss makes it so much easier and quicker.
To Twink Or Not To Twink
Sep/090
Let me start off by explaining the word “Twink.” Twink or Twinking is the process of obtaining items and equipment for a character that they could never have gotten at their level of expertise. The process of twinking has been around for many years, actually as long as there have been online games and the argument of twinking vs. non-twinking as been around just as long.
One side believes that giving a character items far and above their level is just fine since in most cases they have already paid the price of leveling and obtaining superior items once and should not have to do it again. The other side believes that twinking should not be allowed at all. The non-twink camp is usually but not always made up of people who do not have a higher level character and are getting there butts handed to them in PvP.
This ongoing argument has lead many gaming companies to attach level requirements to the drop items in their games. Fortunately for us this has not been the case in Mafia Wars or other Zynga games.
Just for fun I decided to start a brand spanking new character in Mafia Wars and turn him into a terror from day one. I have not yet started recruiting a mafia for him because I want him to be completely ready.
He was created over a week ago and I have not started the leveling process as yet because I want him to be ready to rock when I begin the process. He should be ready to start next week.
Over the last week or so I have been using more than a dozen other accounts to start feeding him items and consumables. I will start playing him when he has the following.
501 – Canonazo
501 – Armored State Car
Once these numbers are reached I will begin recruiting. First I will recruit select people to fill top mafia positions giving this character the best start possible. Other items I will have before I begin will be ample Politico Corrupto, Blackmail Photos, Illegal Transaction Records, Untraceable Cell Phone, Computer Set-up, and any other consumable that I can think of since I do not want to spend time farming them.
Doing all of the preliminary work with my other accounts will give this character a distinct advantage over other players his own level. How much of an advantage? Honestly I cannot give you an answer here because this is the first time I have tried this in Mafia Wars. Only time will tell if this character will become the hitlist monster that I am hoping for
Twinking works in many other games and I am quite sure that it can work in Mafia Wars as well. If you want to give it a whirl create a new character and begin feeding it all of the high level items that you can. Once you have 501 of the best offensive and defensive items start recruiting your mafia, but do it selectively. The first people you should recruit are those that you know will give you the highest bonus in your Top Mafia. Once you have them in place you can go on a recruiting binge. Do not start attacking others until you have at least 500 mafia and you should have a distinct advantage over most players your own level due to your advanced equipment.
4 Quick Tips to Enhance Your Mafia Wars Experience
Sep/092
There is no doubt that Mafia Wars by Zynga has become one of, if not the most popular social network game in the world today. It can be found on most social networks as well as the iPhone and is enjoyed by millions of players each and every day. It is to say the least …addicting, but in a good way.
Other than loving Mafia Wars, what do you think that the majority of the millions of daily players have in common? I can tell you exactly what it is. The thing that they have in common is the lack of any type of plan to succeed. Today I am going to give you a taste of success with a 4 step plan that will put you on the right track to becoming a strong and powerful player.
Step 1 – Plan for Success
If you are going to succeed in Mafia Wars and not shuffle along with the masses you need a plan of action. You need to set goals and work toward them. Are you going to be an all energy leveling dynamo? Are you going to be more of a kick ass and take names kind of player?
Either way you need to plan ahead. You need to determine how you are going to spend skill points, how you are going to use Godfather Points, etc. You also need to set a play schedule.
The schedule that I use and found to work out best is a 3 per day approach. I log on in the morning and get everything done that I need to. I tend to my businesses and property, accept and send invites, accept and send gifts, play the lottery, and finally crank out some jobs. I have to be careful with the jobs part since I rarely if ever need to wait for energy I can go all day in one sitting. I log off and go about my business. Around noon I log in again and again in the evening. This keeps me from getting burnt out.
Step 2 – Mafia Building 101
A team is only as strong it’s your weakest member. Sure you can crank out 500 mafia members in a day or two…but is that really what you want? Yes I can teach you how to have a mafia at maximum size in a few days but I would rather teach you to build your mafia intelligently.
Build you mafia at a steady pace but only when you can equip them. Bare knuckles do not fare well against those with real firepower.
If you want to learn more about the quick way to build your mafia as well as the intelligent method grab a copy of my Ultimate Mafia Wars Leveling Guide.
Step 3 – The Sacred Cash Cow
No business can survive without an influx of cash and even though the legality of an organized crime family is questionable it is most definitely a business. To get the cash flowing you need to buy real estate, but not just any old real estate.
Buy as many Mafia Mike’s as you can afford and keep buying them as you recruit more mafia. Of all of the available properties (other than lots) only Mafia Mike’s cannot be robbed.
Step 4 – Equipment, Equipment, Equipment
To beat the best in the business you are going to need the best equipment in the business. One of the best places to look for great equipment is right on the front page of Mafia Wars itself. Take a look under Limited Time Offers. On the left side you will find a limited time item that does not require any Godfather Points. These items are very nice for the beginning player to use to bolster their equipment.
DO NOT use Godfather Points to purchase equipment. The reason I say this is two fold. First, since these points are purchased with real money you could go broke trying to get 501 of the item and second, there are better items in the game.
Equipment is another reason to take mafia building at a slower pace. Grabbing tons of new players is not going to build a powerful mafia from day one. They are in the same boat that you are…no equipment. Recruit established higher level players when you can, then when you send out your wish list with armored state cars and other powerful items on it you are more likely to get what you wish for.
Mafia Wars is one of the most addicting games on the internet today but to be successful you need a bit of strategy. Plan for success, Build your mafia intelligently, get cash flowing, and get the best equipment. Use those simple steps and you will find that your gaming experience will change dramatically. For highly detailed, step by step information grab a copy of the Ultimate Mafia Wars Leveling Guide.
