Scam Alert for Income Tax Time

Today’s post is not about speed leveling or earning Mafia Wars Cash. It is however about cash. With April 15^th just around the corner I thought I would warn you about some scams that are being run that may cost you some real world cash and we all know that is much more important than any game.

The IRS reports that scams are way up this year when it comes to time. The scams include

• Social Network Scams

  This scam is being perpetrated on Twitter for the most part but could be used in any social network such as Facebook or Myspace. If you get a tweet or message on your social network that is offering a “guaranteed” tax refund it is a scam. It is not might or could be a scam…it IS a scam.

• Personal Data Scams

  If you receive an email from the IRS saying “We have determined that you are eligible to receive a refund of (insert amount)” and then asks for personal information it IS a scam. The IRS does not send email asking for personal data.

• Bogus Websites

  An IRS logo on a website is NOT a guarantee that it is actually an IRS website. Graphics can be stolen with the click of a mouse and it is insanely easy to create an official looking website. If the website address (displayed in your browser bar) does not begin with www.irs.gov it is not an IRS site.

• Tax Expert Fraud

  Steer clear of any tax preparation site that claims that they can get you a bigger refund than others can. Another thing to avoid are sites that base their fee as a percentage of your refund. Even if they are legit you might find that they exaggerate the amounts that are entered on the form to ensure that they get a bigger payday.

  Remember…If you sign the tax form YOU are ultimately responsible for everything on it and any penalties or litigation that result.
