What’s In a Name?

While this post won’t help you speed through levels or earn billions of dollars over night, it will give you some insight into naming your character from an experienced player.

I have been playing Mafia Wars since it first arrived and have discovered a few things along the way that you might be interested in. Some of the things I have discovered are how to level like a mad man, how earn billions faster than greased lightning, how to win just about every fight I am involved in, how to work the hitlist like a predator instead of prey, and many others. Grab a copy of my Ultimate Mafia Wars Leveling guide for all of that.

Today I am going to give you some insight on names and what they can reveal or hide.

The title that appears in front of your name is based on the level of jobs that you have mastered. You will not have access to the full range until you are around level 150. You can use the names to somewhat hide behind.

For instance if you are the type of player who does not attack others and wishes not to be attacked in return keep your title low. Street Thug is the lowest and while you will get attacked wearing this title it does somewhat lessen the chance. After all who really wants to boast that they kicked a street thug’s butt when a higher title sounds so much better?

If you are a fan of being attacked for experience reasons use the highest title you can. The higher the title the more attention it seems to attract.

The part after your name is your character type. The types are Fearless, Maniac, and Mogul. This lets everyone know what position your character can fill in Top Mafia. You cannot change type at this time unfortunately. Zynga has alluded to the fact that this may change in the future but its pretty much all rumors at this point.

Now for the name itself, you can choose anything that you like. Zynga asks that you keep it clean but in my time I have come across some quite raunchy names. We all know that some names attract more attention than others. Some names just seem to beg to be attacked, but that just might be the plan. Earning experience from attacks is a way to advance in the game.

Then there are names that set me off. Usually it’s something like “Illwhipyourarse” or something similar. First I am a fair minded person and names that violate or come close to violating common decency set me off. I am much more likely to attack someone who uses a taunting name than someone with an everyday one. I am also MUCH more likely to attack someone with a vulgar name than a taunting name. Hey that’s just me, you play anyway that you want to.

Naming involves three parts. The first part is your title which you have control over and can change at will as you master tiers. The second part is your actual name and can only be changed by spending Godfather points. Last but not least is your character type and at this time you cannot change it. When naming your character follow Zynga’s request that you it be something acceptable. Also realize that there are players who sometimes attack based on the name alone.

I was wondering, I can’t buy properties on Mafia Wars for Facebook… is it because my title is Mogul?

@Briana – You may have started an account after Zynga removed properties from new york and introduced shaking down places instead. I’ll be writing a blog post about them soon.
